Your eye color color may be a factor in wither you get seasonal affective disorder (SAD). If You have light eyes then you are in luck, us others with dark eyes not so much.
According to a study published by the open access journal of behavioral science and psychology, people with light blue eyes had lower scores on a questionnaire that screened for SAD.
147 undergraduates from South of Wales and Cyprus took the questionnaire.
This shows that according to the study that people with dark eyes have a higher tendency to suffer from SAD then those with light eyes.
The reason why this is so could be because light eyes have less pigmentation (less melatonin). This makes them more sensitive to light, so they don’t need to absorb as much light as dark coloured eyes for the retina cells to receive and process images. People with light coloured eyes also produce less melatonin which may cause them to have some resilience to winter depression. They produce lower levels of melatonin because light colored eyes release less melatonin than dark eyes during the winter. So that’s why they don’t need to reproduce that much of it.
Melatonin is actually a hormone your body makes to help you fall asleep. However researchers say that too much melatonin or if an imbalance of it and serotonin (the mood regulating hormone) happens then this can make people depressed.
Don’t freak out just yet if you are dark eyed like me because all that this research is showing is that eye color could be a factor in getting SAD. It is NOT what determines whether or not you get SAD. So light up my beautiful dark eyed friend. And I actually mean that figuratively as well as literally. Read on 😉
If you are feeling a little down in the winter then there are many lights you can buy for your home made especially for the winter blues, you turn them on and sit in front of them. I personally bought one back in 2003, a big Philips one and still use it to this day, it helps a lot since there are a lot of gloomy winter days here where the sun is nowhere to be seen. However when the sun is out then so am I even if it’s cold. Hope these tips help you out!
